Dr. N. Scott Adzick (pictured below), Surgeon-in-Chief at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), will be recognized with the CHI Be My Sugar Award for Surgical Excellence. Dr. Adzick is a pioneer in the field of pediatric surgery and one of the premier pediatric surgeons in the World. His expertise in the surgical treatment of HI is unparalleled; he has performed surgeries on over 400 babies and children with HI. Thanks to Dr. Adzick, hundreds of babies born with both focal and diffuse HI are leading full and healthy lives. Dr. Adzick’s leadership was instrumental in creating the Congenital Hyperinsulinism Center at CHOP and his contributions to HI research have improved the understanding and surgical management of this condition.

Jim Nestor will be awarded the CHI Be My Sugar Patient Advocacy Award for creating one of the first online international rare disease patient networks for families to support each other and share information. This network which went live in 1998 was the only source of patient-reported information and support for over a decade. There will be a brief update on recent advances in the field and leading clinicians, researchers and HI centers will be recognized for their important work.

Located in the hip and lively Seaport neighborhood of Boston, the Renaissance Boston Waterfront hotel is both relaxed and elegant. In a stunning room with nautical accents, guests can expect a meaningful and enjoyable evening. There will be a reception with artisanal hors d’oeuvres and modern cocktails and an evening meal prepared by an award winning culinary team.

Funds raised at the Sugar Soiree will support the work of CHI to:

  • Raise vital awareness of the condition to prevent prolonged hypoglycemia that can lead to brain damage and death
  • Advance new research with the development of the HI Global Registry
  • Help patients gain access to specialized treatment, medications, and supplies
  • Fund a competitive international HI research fund administered by the University of Pennsylvania
  • Foster patient engagement in new HI drug development
  • Provide families and patients a safe forum for sharing and up-to-date online resources
  • Develop the Centers of Excellence Program to ensure accessible and expert care
  • Support funds to help patient families in need travel to and stay in out-of-town hospital locations while children are receiving specialized care.

For room reservations at the Renaissance, held under “Sugar Soiree” Block, call 617-338-4111 or 800-468-3571 at the rate of $195 per night, the weekend of November 4-6. You must reserve by October 6.
